Retail Lighting — A Ready Reckoner for Stores & Showrooms

A quick-reference guide for retail projects. Retail lighting sells — it is driven by contrast and colour, not flat brightness. The eye goes to the brightest, best-rendered object, so ratios matter more than absolute lux.

Ten rules for retail light

  • Contrast sells — feature products at 3–5× the ambient. If everything is equally bright, nothing sells.

  • CRI ≥90 is the floor; ≥95 for premium, food and cosmetics.

  • Match — and hold — colour temperature to the brand and product, consistently.

  • Light the product vertically, not the aisle — that is what customers see.

  • Win the window — it competes with daylight and the street; bright, adjustable, re-set often.

  • The fitting room is a sales tool — flattering vertical light drives conversion and cuts returns.

  • Stay flexible — adjustable track and aimable spots let staff re-merchandise weekly.

  • Kill veiling glare on glossy packaging and glass — angle and shield.

  • Protect the goods — UV-free, low-heat LED for fabrics, art and food.

  • Mind energy & heat across long trading hours.

  • Vertical illuminance on product · adjustable track · window beats daylight

  • Flattering fitting-room light · veiling-glare control · UV-free sensitive goods · POS 500 lux
