Natural Light as the Reference Standard in Lighting Design

When the lighting industry assigns a Colour Rendering Index of 100 to natural daylight, it is not awarding a score. It is acknowledging that daylight is the definition — the zero point, the reference against which every artificial source is a departure.
Natural light spans the full visible spectrum continuously, with no gaps and no artificial peaks. Every wavelength between 380 and 700 nanometres is present, which means every colour, every material, and every surface can be perceived as accurately as physics allows. No artificial source yet achieves this. Even the best LED products, rated CRI 97 or 98, are approximations — very good approximations, but approximations nonetheless.
Beyond spectral completeness, natural light has qualities that no static artificial source replicates. It changes colour temperature continuously, from the deep amber of sunrise through the blue-white intensity of solar noon and back again. It shifts direction by the hour, revealing and concealing different textures as the day progresses. It varies in intensity with cloud cover, season, and latitude in ways the human nervous system finds inherently readable — we evolved to interpret those changes as information about time, weather, and place.
These qualities have practical consequences. Materials selected and approved under artificial light — even high-CRI artificial light — may read differently in naturally lit conditions. This is metamerism, and it affects every category of interior finish. Artwork evaluated under gallery lighting may look different under the daylight that enters through a skylight nearby. Skin tones, food, fabric, and paint all reveal aspects of themselves under natural light that artificial sources can only approximate.
Start every project by understanding the natural light that inhabits the space — its direction, its intensity, its seasonal variation. Everything else is about managing its absence, or its presence, as intelligently as possible.
You are not replacing natural light. You are approximating it — with varying degrees of honesty.
