Luminaire, Lamp, Fixture — Do You Know the Difference?

Language matters in technical disciplines. In medicine, in engineering, in architecture — precise terminology prevents miscommunication and misdiagnosis. Lighting is no different, and yet three of its most fundamental terms are routinely conflated in ways that cause real problems on real projects.
A lamp is the light source itself. The LED module, the bulb, the fluorescent tube, the halogen capsule. It is the component that converts electrical energy into visible light. When a lamp fails, you have a source replacement issue.
A luminaire is the complete, assembled lighting unit — the lamp plus the housing, the optics, the driver or ballast, the heat management system, and all electrical and mechanical components integrated together. It is the thing specified on a drawing, purchased from a manufacturer, and installed by a contractor. When a luminaire fails, the cause could be any of its constituent components — and identifying which one determines whether you have a quality, installation, or specification problem.
A fixture is a looser, more colloquial term — used widely in North American practice to mean a luminaire, and in general usage to refer to anything permanently installed. In international professional practice, luminaire is the correct term. Fixture is acceptable in conversation but imprecise in documentation.
Why does this matter beyond semantics? Because when something goes wrong — and in any project of scale, something will — the ability to identify precisely what failed, at what level of the assembly, determines how quickly and accurately the problem is resolved. A lamp failure has a different cause, cost, and solution than a driver failure or a housing failure. The contractor who knows the difference resolves it faster. The designer who specified correctly prevents it from happening again.
In lighting, what you call something determines whether you solve the right problem.
